HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is a sort of programming language that allows us to view web pages on the Internet. Without HTML everything we read would be simple plain text and very dull to look at. Without HTML our internet browsers like internet explorer, firefox or netscape would not be able to interpret our webpages. HTML is a set of instructions for your browser to interpret and present the web page in a visual form for you to see.
HTML has two main parts - a head and a body. The head consists of the webpage title, meta tags, and other things that are hidden to the visitors of the site because they don't really need to know them. The body is the main part of a website. This is the part where the webmaster codes what he or she wants the visitor to see.
HTML is a very simple language. The formatting is structured around a body with opening and closing tags and is easy to learn. The tags are also simple. They behave with opening and closing marks, just like the body, and each tag defines a certain function. These functions can include anything from changing the font color to placing an image. The only thing tags require is memory, as the user must always place closing marks and remember which tag does which function.
In the early period of HTML, if you wanted to design a web page, you were limited to notepad and your imagination. There were no HTML editors. With the passage of time, many editors have come and gone. The most popular today are Microsoft Front Page and Macromedia Dreamweaver. Both products are excellent. Both have their good and bad points and both pretty much do almost everything for you as far as HTML coding. But these editors are not perfect. They make mistakes and add unnecessary code. So if you want to design a website you must have the knowledge of HTML.
